Applied Acoustics Systems Chromaphone 2 – Acoustic Object Synthesizer (Download)

Chromaphone 2 from Applied Acoustic Systems is a plug-in that combines software models of various acoustic resonators to create drum, percussion, string, and synthesizer-like instruments. The resonators’ material, tuning, and coupling parameters allow the creation of a wide range of instruments and sonic colors, with results varying from real to innovative.

A wooden bar makes a xylophone; turned metallic it becomes a glockenspiel. Adding a tube transforms it into a vibraphone or marimba. Plates shape up in bells and cymbals. Membranes are used for drum skins, and when combined with a tube, they create bass drums, snares, congas and bongos. For musicians and producers the plug-in provides the ability to essentially become instrument makers.

The software takes into account the effect of coupling between resonators. Bringing together acoustic objects, for example the string and soundboard at the bridge of a guitar, changes the way each of them vibrates. A proprietary technology models precisely how the objects interact and exchange energy thereby capturing key acoustic behaviors of musical instruments.

One-shot sounds are no longer limited to just velocity changes. The plug-in utilizes the entire keyboard range to modulate volume, mallet noise and stiffness, noise-filter frequency and density, hit position, and coupling to open a whole world of expressive sounds, and in a totally step-less fashion. And built-in effects include compressor, EQ, delay, distortion, phaser, chorus, flanger, wah wah, notch filters, and reverb.

Performance features include the ability for the software to match the user’s playing style or musical context thanks to the tap tempo and sync to host clock options, up-to-4-voice unison, and flexible vibrato. An arpeggiator offers various syncing resolutions, playing algorithms, and rhythmic patterns that will spruce up any chord progressions.

What’s New in Version 2

  • Bank and program manager: Strum GS-2’s new manager allows simple and efficient organization, backup, and sharing of your sounds.
  • Overhauled effects: Reinvigorated and polished, Strum GS-2’s multi-effect processor features our best sounding chorus, delay, phaser, flanger, distortion, notch filter, wah-wah, auto-wah, and reverb to date!

Pick a Guitar from Your Collection

  • Strum GS-2 comes with 253 acoustic and electric guitars including nylon, steel, single-coil and humbucker fitted pickups, clean, crunchy, and distorted.
  • A 2-channel amplifier, spring reverb, speaker cabinet, and effects are onboard to help you tailor your sound to your production style.

Realistic Guitar Performances on Your Keyboard

  • The right voicings for the chords you know: Strum GS-2 chord library contains basic and extended chords available in open, movable, or drop voicings. Play the chords you know and Strum voices them automatically as a guitarist would.
  • Strum with MIDI loops in 101 musical styles: Use the vast collection of 707 recorded strumming patterns over the chords you play and find inspiration for your track. Drag and drop the loop to your host sequencer and make it perfect for you song.
  • Strum on your keyboard: Trigger down and upstrokes, scratches and mutes, or create picking patterns using the arpeggio keys.
  • Articulation and expression: Slide and bend with the pitch wheel or aftertouch. Add vibrato with the modulation wheel. Natural hammer-ons and pull-offs when playing leads.

Create Your Own Guitar

  • Picks and fingers: Use a pick that is rounded or sharp, and stiff or soft. Dig into the strings or use a light touch. Play near the bridge or toward the neck for an evolving tone.
  • String by string: Select material and natural decay for each string. Precise control of coupling and interactions at the bridge breathe life into your tone with beating and organic envelopes.
  • Pickups: Whether they are single-coils or humbuckers, pickups are a fundamental part of the electric guitar sound. They shape the whole instrument’s response, and their multiple configurations give tremendous tone flexibility.
  • Body shopping: The soundboard of a guitar radiates vibrations from the strings. Choose a body size to color the sound with specific resonances and find the right character.
  • Mutes and scratches: As on a real guitar, strings interact with the players hands and frets. Fine-tune your rhythm parts and riffs with palm muting, scratches, and hammer-ons.

The Benefits of Physical Modeling

  • Sound manipulation at the source core
  • Presets load in a flash
  • Supersmooth dynamics—no velocity layers
  • Small memory footprint—less than 256 MB of RAM per instance
  • Installs in less than a minute
