Description

Steinberg Nuendo 13 is music and audio postproduction workstation software designed to provide versatile workflows, task efficiency, and integration with industry-standard tools for composers, audio editors, sound designers, and mixers, in film, television, music, game audio, VR, postproduction, and immersive sound. In this latest update, Nuendo 13 introduces unique and time-saving features for dialog editors and mixing and recording engineers, new integrated workflows for authoring MPEG-H Audio content, innovative tools for dialog recording, Dolby Atmos improvements, additional plug-ins, and more than 20 extra workflow enhancements.

For superior audio quality, Nuendo 13 utilizes a 64-bit audio engine compatible with resolutions up to 384 kHz. The software offers unlimited audio, instrument, and MIDI tracks, and can accommodate up to 256 physical I/O as well as 256 group channels. Nuendo 13 offers advanced mixing capabilities and a powerful film-mixing-style automation system. Over 100 professional effect and processor plug-ins are part of the package, including a convolution reverb with many impulse responses, a high-quality channel strip, and channel EQ. The convenient loudness track and loudness meter helps you keep control over your levels. Nuendo 13 is compatible with macOS and Windows systems and operates in VST2 and VST3 formats. (Only 64-bit plug-ins are supported. Nuendo does not support VST2 when running natively on Apple Silicon Macs).

What’s New in Nuendo 13

Dialog Recording

ADR Script Reader

  • With ADR Script Reader, Nuendo 13 moves away from cumbersome document-based workflows. It shows ADR takes via a web browser on any tablet or laptop on the same LAN network, letting the voice talent have a digital script and the ability for an editor or the session director to change it instantaneously.
  • Dialog can be edited and notes added in Nuendo’s marker data with no need for the inconvenience of syncing documents.
  • A Dialog Context Preview displays the dialog lines before and after those selected, highlighting how the currently selected line is embedded in the scene.

Dialog Editing

TonalMatch

  • TonalMatch is a new direct offline process (DOP), which analyses the sound characteristics of an audio recording and enables it to be transferred to other clips, matching the spectral profile (EQ) and ambient noise floor. It can be used to match an ADR session to the original production sound more quickly and precisely than has previously been achievable using EQs and/or other editing plug-ins.

VoiceSeparator

  • VoiceSeparator is a new AI-based VST plug-in, which is trained to detect and isolate spoken dialog from complex background noises including other voices, and also reduce or remove undesired voice sounds from background and ambient recordings. Used as an insert effect or DOP, it can be used to quickly isolate the sounds that are wanted and remove those that aren’t.

VocalChain Plug-in

  • Dialog editing, processing, and creative voice sound design are arts of their own, needing a lot of expertise and experience to master. The new VocalChain plug-in includes dedicated modules for the different steps of voice processing, helping to deliver excellent results. With a wide range of presets exclusively for postproduction, VocalChain makes voice sound design faster and more efficient than ever.

Detect Silence Extensions

  • Cleaning up dialog while keeping background noise for use on a different track is easier with the updated Detect Silence panel. Instead of only stripping silent parts, dialog content can now be split automatically, then events can be created for the silent and nonsilent areas. Dialog and silent events can then be edited individually, as required by the project.

Bounce Empty Space

  • Bounce Selection now allows blank audio clips to be created from any selection, which can be useful for filling gaps or for later offline processing.

Support for TTAL 1.1

  • Nuendo 13 now provides greater support to TTAL-based Netflix dubbing workflows by supporting TTAL 1.1, including Forced Narrative and multicharacter attributes.

ADR Swipe Improvements

  • ADR count-in and swipe options can now be set independently. Black picture can be selected during preroll, regardless of count-in type.

Immersive Audio Experience

Next Generation Audio

  • Nuendo 13 features a completely integrated workflow for authoring and mixing content for the object-based MPEG-H Audio format. The ADM Authoring window now offers it as a new format, where tracks and groups can be assigned as objects or beds to MPEG-H Audio components. In the new Renderer for MPEG-H plug-in, metadata parameters can be configured to create versions of the mix called presets. These presets are a key feature of MPEG-H Audio, offering advanced interactivity options. From the Renderer the project can then be exported as MPEG-H ADM or MPEG-H Master files.

Three-Layer Z-Panning Mode

  • MPEG-H Audio requires three-layer Z-panning range for below listener sounds, meaning the Z-parameter range must allow negative values. This is now possible in Nuendo 13. To ensure full compatibility with older projects and Nuendo versions, two user-selectable Z-panning modes are available—the new three-layer and the previous two-layer.

ADM Authoring Formats

  • The ADM Authoring window has been updated to support different immersive formats—Dolby Atmos (Internal Renderer), Dolby Atmos (External Renderer), MPEG-H, and OSC. After selecting the desired object-based authoring format, the ADM editor will display the attributes and settings available for that format.

Renderer for Dolby Atmos Enhancements

  • The new Renderer for Dolby Atmos adds 9.1.6 speaker configuration support, a common cinema format used in many studios and for Atmos-enabled Home Theaters. Supporting this format brings Nuendo 13 into line with the latest surround sound developments.

Mixing and Sound Design

More Models for Headphones Match

  • Headphones Match has been updated with five extra headphone models: Shure SRH 1840, Audio Technica ATH-M70x, Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X, Neumann NDH-30 and AKG K-70.

Channel Tab

  • The new Channel tab in the Project window gives direct access to all functions of the channel strip, without having to switch to the MixConsole. Detached from the Track Inspector, the important processing and functions sections of the project’s tracks can be worked on while viewing more of the overall project.

Redesigned MixConsole

  • The MixConsole has been overhauled with a streamlined design, providing more straightforward access to the most frequently-used functions.

Vocoder

  • Get really creative with vocal sound design and add analog flavor to audio clips with the legendary Steinberg Vocoder. Use up to 24 filter bands, sidechain input, and enjoy in-depth control over the sounds of voices.

EQ-P1A and EQ-M5 Equalizers

  • Two new equalizers, the EQ-P1A and the EQ-M5, add a classy sound to your productions.

Black Valve and VoxComp Compressors

  • These two new compressors provide even more control over your sound. The VoxComp is specifically designed for voices, gently taming recordings without compromising clarity, transients, or expression. BlackValve is a classic tube compressor with lots of warmth, character, and sonic detail.

Sampler Track

  • Sound design with the Sampler Track is now even more creative, thanks to stunning new Spectral Warp modes for extreme manipulation of samples, sound effects, and powerful envelope creation.

SpectraLayers One Update

  • The new and improved SpectraLayers One features an updated spectral engine, state-of-the-art AI processing, and faster, better results when unmixing vocals.

Workflow and Productivity Enhancements

Replace Audio in Video

  • It’s now possible to export a new soundtrack directly into the original mp4 video file, avoiding time-consuming video rerendering. This is useful in many situations—the composer previewing a film score, a scene with dialog and SFX as a guide for the composer, a rehearsal reel for a voice actor before ADR recording, or other previews provided by sound editors.

Track Versions for Video Tracks

  • When producing to picture, a project often needs to be edited to new versions of a video file. Making A-B video-edit comparisons within a project is now more convenient with Track Versions for the video track. This allows the inclusion of specific versions of a video file with a set of other tracks, then refers back to previous edits by switching track versions.

Track Import Improvements

  • Nuendo 13 includes new track import improvements, to make bringing content in from a variety of delivered reels and project files more flexible. The revised import dialog includes options for more flexibility and control when importing tracks, events and time ranges, as well as the ability to restrict the range of imported events and how they are merged to existing tracks.

Project Templates

  • If you’re new to Nuendo or switching from a different DAW, these new project templates will get you started quickly. They include stereo and surround, up to Dolby Atmos postproduction projects, ADR sessions and immersive audio formats like MPEG-H, Ambisonics and Dolby Atmos music.

New Key Commands Dialog

  • The new Key Command dialog makes managing shortcuts quick and easy. Find commands with the dynamic filter and try new macros on the fly. Many new commands have also been added, including rename selected events, add marker on active marker track, and move range to next hit point.

Playback Start Point

  • When switching from a different DAW, it can sometimes be difficult to adapt to different workflows. The playback start position can now be configured from the current location, cycle start or selection, which is a familiar workflow in other DAWs. Return to start position on stop is also available.

Audition Unprocessed Sound for DOP

  • Comparing audio events processed with DOP against their previous state is easier. By ALT-clicking on the audition button, processing can be bypassed when previewing clips.

Modern Video Engine

  • The video engine for Windows systems has been improved, including GPU hardware decoding for H.264 and better overall performance. Video playback is now more fluent.

Switch Channel Configuration

  • The channel configuration can now be switched from mono to stereo and vice versa with a single click.

Vertical Zoom with Mouse Wheel

  • Zoom in and out vertically with the mouse wheel, to a choice of transport or selection, by pressing CMD+Shift.

Hybrid CPU Architecture Support

  • Nuendo 13 takes full advantage of modern computer CPUs for enhanced audio processing.

Better Windows Handling

  • Nuendo 13 features Windows-compliant multiwindow handling.

Flexible Return Channels

  • Instrument tracks/racks/sampler return channels can be set as inputs for audio tracks, as well as FX and group channels.

Features

Edit Dialog

Import

  • This powerful feature allows you to search for Field Recorder audio files matching selected events in the project by choosing a set of predefined search criteria—a process which can otherwise take weeks of manual work. A list of files with attributes or metadata similar to the selected project events will be displayed, with options to check the search result and preview the files. After confirmation, the chosen audio files will be inserted into the project and edited to match the originally selected events.

ARA support

  • With Audio Random Access (ARA) Extensions, you can edit your audio even more easily. ARA allows you to integrate and use your compatible plug-ins—such as SpectraLayers, Melodyne, and more—directly into your DAW’s Lower Zone Editor.

SpectraLayers One

  • This compact version of the acclaimed visual audio editing tool allows you to visualize and accurately clean up your audio. Thanks to the state-of-the-art source separation engine, you can separate the vocal part from any kinds of audio tracks, whether you want to remix your favorite song or create mash-ups.

Audio Alignment

  • This tool allows you to automatically match the timing of audio events that you want to play back simultaneously. For example, you can match the timing of a dialog take or an alternative take to the production sound, or solve phasing problems when using different microphones on the same take. It also allows you to match the timing of different instrument or vocal tracks.

Direct Offline Processing

  • Apply any kind of process offline for single or multiple selected events—with the feel of real-time effects—but without the CPU load. It allows you to keep your MixConsole clean but, at the same time, pave the way for further non-destructive changes. There is a Favorites section where you can store your frequently used effects with predefined parameter settings, either as single-processes or as batch processes. You can load FX Chain presets from the MixConsole and from Track Presets within the DOP window, while it is also possible to add a tail to the end of selected events, providing a natural-sounding decay when using effects like delay and reverb.

Intelligibility Meter

  • Based on artificial intelligence algorithms developed by the Fraunhofer IDMT in Oldenburg, Germany, this module evaluates the intelligibility of the spoken word in a mix, thus helping engineers to deliver an optimal, clearly understandable dialog mix.

Sample Editor

  • Edit your audio with almost limitless creative freedom in the Sample Editor. A comprehensive set of tools offers a huge range of functions, covering everything from common editing tasks down to sample level adjustments. It is a complete production environment with fast, intuitive, and outstanding quality audio tools, which allow you to manipulate your recordings in almost any way imaginable.

Composing

Arranger Track

  • Setup your project in a non-linear fashion by using an arranger track, which allows you to specify how and when specific sections are played back, even in live performances. It means you do not need to move, copy, and paste events in the Project window.

Chord Assistant

  • You don’t have to be a musical genius to create beautiful melodies, thanks to the powerful Chord Assistant. It helps you to generate everything from simple pop to complex jazz chord sequences that sound great. It is even possible to specify the first and final chords and, if you don’t know what should go in between, the Chord Assistant will list chord suggestions, which you can choose from.

Chord Pads

  • This inspiring tool helps you compose music quickly and creatively. It is very easy to get “stuck” when writing chord progressions but, with the fast and easy-to-use Chord Pads, fresh inspiration will always be close at hand. Jam with chords and patterns in real time and control multiple parameters to change chords as you go. The chord pads are playable via a MIDI controller, and real-time parameters allow you to easily improvise chord performances by changing voicings, tensions, and much more while you are letting the music and inspiration carry you along

Expression Maps

  • Expression Maps allow you to audition a composition, including musical articulations. Within these maps, you can specify the sound mapping and characteristics for all your musical expressions.

Global Tracks

  • With Global Tracks in the Key Editor, you stay in sync even better and you don’t have to jump between the different windows. Just view all Global Tracks—such as signature track, video track, or marker track—in the Key Editor to keep your compositions moving along quickly and creatively.

Scale Assistant

  • Set your song’s scale in the Key Editor and follow its lead, quantize a solo to the scale, or play live in perfect tune. You can change the view to only see the notes of the set scale. You can even let the Scale Assistant analyze your MIDI recording and suggest the right scale.

Chord Assistant Proximity Mode

  • Proximity Mode uses a set of harmonic rules to offer suggestions of triads or four-note chords which match the original chord. The tonal center is highlighted by the original chord at the bottom center of the Chord Assistant window and the farther away a chord suggestion is from it, the more complex the suggestion.

Automated Dialog Replacement (ADR) system

  • Nuendo provides a fully equipped solution for convenient recording of dialog and Foley. Using up to 32 marker tracks, every aspect of a film—such as Foley, dialog, or sound design—can be spotted. Each Nuendo project marker can contain user definable attributes, such as a scene location, the time and the stage directions. Markers can be exported in CSV file format. Nuendo is also able to import EDL lists in the CMX 3600 and CSV formats. The info will show up as a marker track that includes all attributes. If necessary, marker tracks can be imported and exported between Nuendo projects, giving the sound editor or Foley recorder maximum freedom when organizing projects. For the voice recording process, the Nuendo ADR Taker System offers a dedicated panel with three different modes: rehearse, record, and review, including pre- and post-record option. Also included are various filtering and sorting functions.

Foley recording

  • The ADR Taker also provides a fast, flexible tool to manage Foley recording sessions. The powerful ADR take-list can be used to mark Foley-relevant scenes and capture the Foley artist’s performance accordingly. By using the Free mode, Foley recordings are not restricted to the end point of each single scene, making it easy to record longer Foley takes in one go. Thanks to the automated naming scheme, Foley files can be retrieved and used in the project on the basis of individual naming attributes such as the character name or Foley specific topics like “underground” or “material”.

Metronome Click (Advanced)

  • The Click Pattern Editor allows you to compose custom metronome patterns with up to four different accent levels, and to assign several different patterns to the Signature Track, making it easy for the click to follow any time signature change. You can select one of the many pre-installed click sounds or load your own, ensuring the metronome is always helping you to keep perfectly in time.

Pool

  • Every time you record on an audio track, a file is created on your hard disk. A reference to this file (a clip) is added to the Pool. The Pool displays folders and their contents in a similar way to the File Explorer/macOS Finder, allowing you to intuitively perform operations that affect files on disk and that only affect clips.

Pre-Roll / Post-Roll

  • This allows the project cursor to roll back by a specified time value before playback starts. When the cursor reaches the left locator, recording is automatically activated. When the cursor reaches the right locator, recording is deactivated, but playback continues for the specified post-roll value before stopping.

Punch In / Punch Out

  • These are a pair of markers which determine the record start (punch in) and record stop (punch out) positions.

Mixing

MixConsole

  • The MixConsole provides instant access to all vital functions of the mixer, thanks to its single-window concept. Store and recall any channel configuration as a preset via view sets, which in turn, allow you to adapt the MixConsole for notebook screens or large-scale monitors. Up to four different MixConsoles can be opened at a time, each with its own channel-visibility configuration and channel zones, allowing you to define which channels you want to see and how they are arranged. With the mix section elements, all channel parameters can be shown together or in any combination—be it EQ, dynamics, sends, or inserts. Essential combinations can be stored for later recall. The Mix Inspector pane also gives instant access to all channel relevant parameters.

Film-Mixing-Style Automation

  • The Nuendo automation system is based on functionality found in large format mixing consoles. The fully customizable automation panel provides access to all automation functionality and settings. Features such as individual punch out modes per channel, optional Virgin Territories, Fill commands for writing automation (to start, end, punch in, or loop), Preview Mode, Automation Suspend (for read and write), and much more come together to form perhaps the most sophisticated automation solution available today.

Control Room

  • This high-end feature has been engineered exclusively for Steinberg’s audio production systems and is unavailable on any other software DAW. It is a unique recording and monitoring environment, which seamlessly integrates performer mixes and monitoring setups into your recording and mixing workflow. You can create and manage up to four unique studio mixes to feed performers their own tailored mix, use the integrated talkback function and manage audio from external sources—all seamlessly integrated into the Nuendo MixConsole.

VST MultiPanner

  • Nuendo’s immersive sound panning system provides full support for surround formats up to 22.2 as well as Auro-3D and Dolby Atmos, which enables sound to move in a three-dimensional space. The VST MultiPanner provides a 2D-Top View and a 3D-Rear View, displaying the audio sources, which can be linked together or grabbed individually to perform several movements including signal rotation, such as tilt or rotate. To easily create bottom-top pan movements, several elevation patterns are on hand. VST MultiPanner also provides an Ambisonics mode.

Renderer for Dolby Atmos

  • Included in Nuendo is a Dolby Atmos VST renderer, that allows for real-time monitoring, downmixing, and rerendering object-based mixes, without requiring external software or hardware.

ADM Authoring for Dolby Atmos

  • In this window, you can configure objects and beds from existing tracks in
