Available for download, Slate Digital Virtual Tape Machines, or VTM, is a plug-in that emulates the harmonic characteristics and dynamic responses of analog tape machines. This plug-in is designed to be used on tracks, submixes, and even stereo mixes, to lend your digital tracks a little analog mojo.
The controls are relatively simple and streamlined, including: input, output, bias selection, speed selection, tape width, and tape type. By default, the input and output stages are linked, so the harder you drive the input, the more the output knob automatically turns down, giving you a fatter, thicker, and more harmonically distorted sound without an obvious jump in level.
You can unlink these controls if you wish. You can also tweak other parameters in the settings panel including the ability to turn off or turn up the signal’s noise floor, as this is often associated with tape machines. This software is compatible with Mac and Windows platforms and can operate in AU, VST, and AAX formats. iLok 2 or 3 is required run VTM.
