Description

Get the sound of a celebrated ’80s speaker in one of the most popular large cabs while enjoying a realistic playing feel with the Overloud CHP Brit 1960 4×12 G1280, an impulse response (IR) library made for TH-U SuperCabinet (available separately). Containing over 300 IRs, this library captures Rola Celestion G12-80 speakers loaded in a closed-back Marshall 1960A 4×12″ cabinet, recorded with 11 microphones and two preamps. Thanks to the use of a motorized mic stand, precision and consistency were maintained throughout the execution of eight to 16 positions per microphone.

Detailed Source Capture

Brit 1960 4×12 G1280 is the Choptones SuperCabinet IR library created by capturing a Marshall 1960A 4×12″ cabinet loaded with Rola Celestion G12-80 speakers. It is an extensive and systematic capture created with 11 microphones, eight to 16 positions per microphone, and multiple mic preamps, for more than 300 IRs globally. Captures are performed with a motorized mic stand in order to have consistent measurements across libraries.

The Cab and Speaker

One of the most commonly used 4×12″ cabs, the solid birch Marshall 1960A cabinet is ideal for modern rock, with its slanted front, closed back, and legendary status. The Rola Celestion G12-80, only made for two years, is an iconic ’80s speaker that provides plenty of volume with fatter lows and mids than other Celestion speakers of that era.

Works in SuperCabinet

The library is created for the TH-U SuperCabinet, which allows users to:

  • Graphically browse the IRs in the library
  • Blend IRs together
  • Craft new cabinet tones with the multiband mode
  • Use the IR in the software
  • Export the IRs in WAV format, compatible with software IR loaders and all major hardware modelers

Gear and Session Details

11 microphones were used during the capturing session.

  • AKG C414
  • Audio-Technica 2035

Every microphone was moved to four different horizontal positions (cap, cap edge, cone, and cone edge) and two distances, for a total of eight IRs each. For some microphones, the set of eight measurements was repeated with the microphone off axis (45°). The entire measurement set was repeated twice with two different mic preamps—a Neve 1073 and a German preamp.
