Kilohearts Phase Plant Modular Synthesizer Plug-In Instrument Software (Download)
Phase Plant from Kilohearts is a modular-style plug-in software synthesizer that functions as host software for the company’s Snapin series of plug-ins. The flexible system offers sound generators in four varieties including Analog, Sample, Wavetable, and Noise which can then be filtered and processed with built-in modules and Snapin plug-ins. The free version of Kilohearts Toolbox with six Snapins is included, and many more are available for purchase separately.
Phase Plant is compatible with most DAW software operating on the AU, AAX, and VST2 platforms and opens up an enormous vista of sound sculpting possibilities. The synth’s flexible but intuitive routing system provides you with a variety of oscillator, sample player, filter, and effect modules in the generator pane, which you can then process in effect lanes using Snapin plug-ins. The modulation pane offers a vast array of modulation options, and almost all the parameters in Phase Plant and in the Snapins can be modulated. Macros can be created for external automation within your host DAW.
The software provides a large library of presets to get you started, all of which are fully functional. You must own (have a license for) the effect plug-in to alter the parameters for that effect. The system allows you to share presets with friends and collaborators, so you can collaborate easily. If you’re ready to explore exciting modular synthesizer possibilities, Phase Plant might be the perfect fit for your digital workflow.
The Generators
- Phase Plant currently offers four signal generators; Analog, Wavetable, Sample, and Noise. More generators are being developed for future free updates. You can add as many as you like and route them freely between each other. There are also several utility modules to allow you even greater freedom in designing your sounds such as groups, mixing, and aux options.
- For each generator group you can add an output module to send the sound to an effects lane, master, or sideband. You can also use a group purely as an audio rate modulation source for any other generator.
- That’s right, Phase Plant allows for frequency modulation between all types of signal generation; FM from A to Z.
Load Up Your Snapins
- Snapins are regular VST/AU plug-ins that you can use for a multitude of purposes. They come in a bunch of different flavors, and Kilohearts is creating more all the time.
- The unique thing about the Snapin series is that they also work as modular effect pieces that you can combine in our Snapin host plug-ins.
- Phase Plant includes the free version of the Kilohearts Toolbox set with 6 Snapin plug-ins, including 3-band EQ, Chorus, Delay, Limiter, Gain, and Stereo to get you started.
- The three effects lanes in Phase Plant allow you to load the easy-to-use Snapins from the Kilohearts ecosystem as building blocks within your Phase Plant patches. In true modular fashion, you simply add and configure the Snapins you need and mix the lanes individually.
- Don’t miss that Poly toggle at the top of each lane. This enables per-voice processing, applying all the effects in that lane to each voice individually, even giving each voice unique random values from the Random modulator.
Content Banks
- Additional presets, wavetables, samples, and LFO shapes for Phase Plant.
- Presets that include Snapins that you don’t own will still work, but you can’t adjust the parameters unless you have the license for that plug-in.
Kilohearts Multipass Multiband Signal-Splitting Plug-In Host (Download)
Multipass from Kilohearts is host software for the company’s Snapin series of plug-ins that makes it easy to create and manipulate complex chains of effects and allows you to do frequency-dependent processing on up to 5 separate frequency bands. Snapin plug-ins are available separately for purchase, and some are included with the Multipass host software.
Multipass is compatible with most DAW software operating on the AU, AAX, and VST2 platforms and has been engineered to provide low-latency performance with minimal phase shifting, for terrific-sounding results. In addition to intuitive frequency-band processing, the software opens up a wide range of modulation possibilities with routing to almost every parameter in a Snapin plug-in. Macros can be created for external automation within your DAW.
The software provides a wide range of presets, all of which are fully functional. You must own (have a license for) the effect plug-in to alter the parameters for that effect. The system allows you to easily share presets with friends and collaborators, so you can collaborate easily. If you’re ready to explore exciting modular effect possibilities, Multipass might be the perfect fit for your digital workflow.
Split the Sound
When adding effects to a sound, it’s not uncommon to want to apply these effects to just a certain part of the sound. For example, you might not want a complex chorus to affect your bass too much, or a hard distortion to totally fry your high end. Either way, multiband processing adds a dimension to effect chains that really opens up a new world of options in sound design. Multipass helps you with this, allowing you to split the input sound into up to 5 easily tweakable frequency bands and applying unlimited number of effects to each band. Pitch-shifted auto-pan with a filtered chorus-delay distortion—coming right up.
Serial and Parallel Processing with Multiple Effects
Band splitting comes with a bit of a price. It’s unavoidable (without adding latency) to mess a bit with the phase of the sound. Usually this is not a problem, but when chaining multiple multiband effects this can add up to a lot of phase distortion. In Multipass, the band splitting is only done once no matter how many effects you add, leaving the phase as minimally harmed as possible. It also sorts out dry/wet mixing of effect lanes properly without phasing where possible. Parallel multiband compression, here we come.
Vast Modulation Possibilities
While adding four filters, a frequency shifter, and a stereo-width modifier can be interesting in itself. Adding four filters with sweeping cutoffs retriggered by an audio threshold, a frequency shifter bound to the MIDI note, and stereo width scaled by the input RMS can be—well, probably strange. But it may be amazing, and trying it out is just a couple of clicks away. Try it.
Mute and Solo Effects
When you’re tweaking a specific frequency band, the other bands and effects involved can sometimes make it hard to properly hear what’s going on. Mute or solo effect lanes to quickly home in on what you’re doing. And if you automate it, it can even be an effect in itself.
Say Goodbye to Latency Problems
Don’t worry about latency. No matter how you route things or what effects you add, Multipass makes sure everything is in sync, so all modulation aligns properly and avoids phasing issues.
Snapin Modular System
Snapins are regular VST/AU plug-ins that you can use for a multitude of purposes. They come in a bunch of different flavors, and Kilohearts is creating more all the time. The unique thing about the Snapin series is that they also work as modular effect pieces that you can combine in our Snapin host plug-ins—nifty. To give you some feel for what you can do with Snapins, 3-Band EQ, Delay, Chorus, Gain, Limiter, and Stereo Width are all included.
Kilohearts kHs ONE Synthesizer Plug-In Instrument Software (Download)
The kHs One from Kilohearts is a software synthesizer designed to emulate the fat, warm sound of analog synths. The two main oscillators offer a choice of saw, square, or noise modes for a wide variety of tones, while a sub-oscillator with waveshaping is onboard to beef up the low-end. Two filters, two LFOs, three envelopes (amp, filter, and modulation), and four effect choices provide extensive sound-sculpting capabilities.
The synth is compatible with most DAW software operating on the AU, AAX, and VST2 platforms and offers an intuitive interface that makes it easy to load one of the many presets and quickly customize the sound parameters. The kHz ONE supports up to 24 voices of polyphony for complicated chord voicings; alternatively, the 8-voice Unison mode offers massive bass and leads.
3 Main Oscillators + Sub Oscillator
- The main oscillators can operate in three different modes: double saw, pulse, or noise.
- Shaping is available on all three main oscillators to adjust the phase, pulse width, and frequency content respectively.
- The sub oscillator offers shaping and octave controls for additional low-end frequencies.
Envelopes, Filters, and Waveshaper
- kHs ONE comes equipped with three ADSR Envelopes: the amp envelope, the filter envelope, and the mod envelope.
- The synth offers two filters, each of which can operate in four different modes: low pass, high pass, band pass, and formant (a vocal-style filter that emulates vowel sounds).
- Cutoff and Q controls let you precisely sculpt the filter settings.
- The waveshaper control lets you add distortion to the sound, with options ranging from warm distortion to digital FM-like tones.
Effects and Modulation
- Chorus: Layers the sound from kHs ONE with a slightly delayed copy of itself, which can yield anything from subtle space enhancing effects to extreme wobbling strangeness.
- Delay:Â Adds an echo to the sound that can be used both for adding more space to the sound as well as causing interesting rhythmical effects.
- Master: In this section you’ll find gain, EQ, and limiting controls.
- Modulation: Most aspects of kHs ONE can be modulated by five different modulation sources: modulation envelope, velocity, voice LFO, global LFO, and the modulation wheel.

Kilohearts Gate Software (Download)
Kilohearts Gate is a downloadable plug-in for use in pro-audio mixing, one that it often used to remove problematic low-level signal that you don’t need. Too much snare in the kick drum mic? The gate is designed to fix this problem. This plug-in has all the controls designed to handle gating issues, and a few that foster creative use as well.
As with other Kilohearts plug-ins, this software can work as a module within the company’s large ecosystem of effects. Through separately available Snapin hosts, you can arrange and combine this effect with other Kilohearts products. This software will operate on Mac and Windows platforms, and will work in AU, VST2, and AAX formats. It will also work as a Reason extension.
Attack
The attack time is the time it takes to for the gate to fully open when the input volume is over the threshold.
Hold
The hold time is the minimum time the gate will stay open.
Release
The release time is the time it takes to for the gate to fully close when the input volume is under the threshold.
Threshold
The threshold sets the signal level at which the gate will open.
Tolerance
Tolerance is also known as Hysteresis, and it helps you fine-tune the gate’s operation. The hysteresis range requiring the volume to drop a set amount of dB under the threshold before closing.
Range
The amount to attenuate the signal when the gate is closed.
Lookahead
When enabled, a 5 ms lookahead will be used, allowing transients through at the cost of some latency.
Flip
This is an interesting control for a gate: When flipped, the gate will act in reverse, attenuating the signal only when the gate is open. This means you’ll only hear the low-level information.
VU Meter
Displays the current input level, the selected threshold and tolerance, and the gate’s current state.
Side-Chain
When you select another sound source in this sidechain drop-down menu, the plug-in uses that source for determining the behavior of the plug-in instead. This is useful, for instance, for lowering a lead sound whenever the kick hits.
Kilohearts Haas Stereo-Width Software (Download)
Kilohearts Haas is a downloadable plug-in for use in pro-audio mixing, one provides a kind of stereo panning that makes use of the Haas effect.
